Now the Oracle dies after whispering two words to a young temple archivist: “I lied.” The archivist, Nerys Vale, soon learns she is Nerys Serath—the very girl the prophecy condemned. The mystery is not merely whether the Oracle lied. The deeper question is why a woman who could see the future would deliberately create a false prophecy that killed thousands, destroyed an innocent bloodline and placed the current king on the throne. The ultimate answer: sacred prophecy is partly a system of control. The gods use the Threadwell to weight possible futures and institutions enforce those predictions until they become reality.
